5 Natural Ways to Boost Your Mood!

Whether you’re planning your wedding or facing the post-wedding blues, there are times when we all feel a bit blue. But you can turn that frown upside down with these fun and easy mood boosters!

Go outside and exercise! 

Did you know that exercise is one of the best natural mood boosters out there? Research by scientists has found that active people are less depressed than inactive people. Going for a walk or a run can really make a difference – one study found that a 30-minute walk reduces tension, anxiety and increases energy (all things you need when planning a wedding!) Take your dog for a walk and stop to pet it for 15 minutes, and you’ll also release serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin, which are all mood boosting hormones. Stroking a dog also lowers the stress hormone cortisol. Daylight will also boost your mood, so try and exercise outside or at least get out during daylight hours and enjoy the light for a quick mood boost.

Cut the carbs

When you’re feeling a bit down or sluggish the first thing you reach for are those yummy carbs. But this quick fix solution will not help in the long term. Stay away from highly processed foods and eat foods that are high in Omega 3 for a body and mind boost. People with depression have been shown to have lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids, and in countries where there is a lot of fish in the nation’s diet, there are lower rates of depression! Tomatoes are high in mood boosters like folate, magnesium and lycopene, while garlic, chilies, apples and watermelon have all been found to have mood enhancing properties. So eat your way to happiness!

Get some sleep!

We can all get grumpy and down if we haven’t had a good night’s sleep! If you regularly are up late planning your wedding, then it could affect your whole mood and general happiness.  When we don’t get enough sleep there is an increase in the stress hormone, cortisol, which makes us irritable and depressed. Try to get to bed early every night and get a wonderful eight hours sleep. If you’re having trouble sleeping and feel dozy during the day, then (if you’re able to) have a nap! Scientific studies have shown that naps boost alertness, creativity, your productivity and of course boost your mood!

Put on some tunes

Sometimes when you’re in a foul mood, only some Madonna, LMFAO or Pharrell can bring you back to a good place. The University of Missouri discovered during research that listening to an upbeat song can lift your mood. Other imaging studies of the brain have found that happy music activates the reward centers of the brain that release dopamine. This means that music gives us the same surge of happiness that we get from chocolate. So all the joy without the calories! 

Read a book

You’re tired and grumpy, and all you want to do is watch TV. But picking up a book will actually do more for your mood than spending hours staring at a screen. Keeping your mind busy makes you happier! Reading also gives you a bit of escapism, so you can head off to a tropical beach or on an amazing adventure with your imagination. Some mood boosting books to try include The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler.

If all this fails you can always just fake it! By putting a smile on your face you will start to feel better - try it and see!
