Trend Alert! Would You Ditch the Engagement Ring?

When you get engaged you want share your bling with everyone in the whole world. But modern Irish brides are giving the expensive engagement rings a miss and putting the money towards a new home instead.

Littlewoods Ireland asked Irish women what they see as more important than an expensive engagement ring - top of the list came a deposit on a new home. A new kitchen came next followed by soft furnishings including three-piece suites, large comfortable beds, while wide screen TVs and household equipment came fifth.

The average amount spent on an engagement ring in Ireland hasn't changed for the last two years, as couples fork out €1,333 on the sparkler. But in some parts of the country it costs more to pop the question - more rings costing over €3,500 are sold in Cork than anywhere else!

Cork is closely followed by big spenders in Dublin who spend on average €2,149 on the ring, while Galway couples spend €1,449 followed by Limerick couples who spend €1,199 on a ring.

On the flip side, couples in Westmeath spend the least on engagement rings – a budget friendly average of €729. Cavan couples fork out an average €899, Monaghan an average of €1,149, while they push the boat out in Sligo spending an average €1,849 on the ring. But, couples from these regions also put aside a greater amount of their wedding budget on home building than anywhere else.
