How To... Create The Perfect Wedding Cake and Dessert Table

Not everyone loves wedding cake, but people do love desserts – so you can combine the two at your wedding on a beautiful dessert table! The dessert table is the perfect way to complement to your wedding cake, showcasing your multi-teared cake and surrounding with your favorite sweet treats!

Whatever theme or style of wedding you are having you can have a dessert or cake table that perfectly fits in with your day. Whether you want a rustic feel, a vintage style soiree, a classic wedding or want to go all out you can create a table that will wow your guests and satisfy their sweet tooth.

Whether you're having a formal meal or a buffet style dinner, a dessert station gives people the chance to have as much or as little as they want, as well as the chance to mingle with other guests. Your table is the perfect way to add some fun to your wedding reception!

First of all you'll have to decide on your theme. You want your table to blend in with your other decor choices, so it's better to stick with the theme of your day. If you don't have a specific theme you could narrow down your color palette and use them as the basis for your table. When you know what your theme is then you can start working on the details of your table and what you want to feature.

You need to start to think about what you will have on the table, and make sure they are ready in time for the big day. If your baker or caterer isn't delivering the cake and desserts to your venue then you will have to get someone to do it for you. Roughly allow three or four cakes per person, it's better to have a bit too much than too little! Mini desserts are always popular - from hors d'oeuvres to mini pastries. Cupcakes, macarons and cake pops are popular with couples, as are mini cakes and cookies. Feature your favorite treats – and don't forget to have some on the big day!

Want to give your table the WOW factor? Then you need some height! Having your cakes on different levels will add depth and interest to a flat looking table. The obvious choice for adding height is using cake stands, but in reality you can use almost anything! Use books, vintage crates, boxes, small suitcases or anything you have that will create height on your table.

You will want to decorate your table so it really stands out! It's also how you will tie your table in with your theme. But, you don't want your table to look cluttered, so work with the space you have available. You can decorate with almost anything, but remember you will need a table cloth as the base for your styling. Adding a backdrop is a great way to add interest, so think about ways you can liven up the wall – try photo garlands, balloons, fairy lights, ribbons and tassels.

The finishing touch to your table is the signage. Your guests want to know what to eat, so you will need some place cards or signs to say what is on offer. You could make a menu of what is available for your tables so guests can read it before they go up to serve themselves. Their mouths will be watering with what is in store for them!
