5 Alternatives to the Traditional Wedding Cake

Some brides relish in tradition on their big day, while others prefer to mix things up and really surprise their guests. When it comes to cakes you can go wild, break with tradition and have some fun!

But if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, sit down and brainstorm. You can use your non-traditional cake, and your entire day in fact, to tell your guests a story about you and your relationship.

If you want to put a little more personality into your reception, consider swapping out the usual cake for one of these creative treats...

The I Do-Nut cake

With the rising popularity of shows like Food Network Challenge and donut showdowns, these sugar-filled circular breakfast treats are all the rage. If you’re having an early wedding, you can really have fun with this. Use different flavored donuts on tiers to form a cake. Better yet, you can coordinate the icing colors to match your wedding! Get creative and add donut holes, too. Having a late night wedding? This cake knows no bounds and is just as fun in the evening.

I Scream, You Scream

It’s fairly easy to find an ice cream cake these days, but take your love for this delicious frozen treat a bit further on your big day. Create a sundae bar for everyone to enjoy, too! Consider toppings like fruit, nuts and candy pieces that match your wedding colors. Custom M&M’s are great. Don’t forget the hot fudge and whip cream. Good photos guaranteed!

For the French

Depending on your wedding décor and theme, a crepe cake can be a unique and fun option. This alternative can be a little lighter; but just like traditional wedding cakes, you have many flavor and design options. If you’re having a large wedding, you’ll likely need a few crepe cakes. Or, if you opt for just one, consider having crepe stations set up. Have your catering staff man the stations so guests can select from fillings like fruit and Nutella. Choices are always fun!

Shots! Shots! Shots!

Mini desserts and dessert shots are another simple way to give your guests a lot of options. Are there any desserts significant to you? Pumpkin is great for fall weddings, while key lime pie is cool fun summer treat. Having an outdoor wedding? Consider S’mores shots. Pies, s’mores, cookies, oh my! You can’t go wrong here. Pick a few of your favorite desserts, or find some colors and flavors that fit your theme. If you want a tiered look, ask for a multi-tiered stands to stack the different shots on.

The Same, But Different

If you want something a little different, but don’t want to step too far outside your comfort zone, consider a cake pop tower. Cake pop towers can incorporate cake pops and actual cake, or just the pops. Either way, you have a great option for guests to grab-and-go without lengthy lines or serving time.
