Magical inspiration from Coldplay

Sometimes, a song gets released that we just can’t get enough of – until, I guess, we can (though we loved all of the Call Me Maybe covers we saw – hello, US Olympians! – we didn’t love Carly Rae Jepsen so much after 1,000 listens*). This month’s earworm? Coldplay’s Magic, which we can see hanging around a whole lot longer than CMM.

It’s made all that much more bittersweet by the fact that the song got its first couple of days airplay at the same time as one of our favorite couples, Chris and Gwyneth, “consciously uncoupled”. (Say what?)

Forget about that for a second, though, and think about how nice a first dance to Coldplay’s Magic – don’t worry about the conscious uncoupling – would be. It’s got us thinking about fairy lights, candle light, sparklers and fireworks.

And we know what you’re thinking: my wedding’s in summer – how would I incorporate those distinctly Christmassy aspects into my beautiful outdoor reception? Well, unless you’re celebrating just north of the polar circle around June 21st (that’s Norway, Sweden, Finland, Alaska, some parts of Canada or Greeland), you can pretty much guarantee that it’s going to get dark before your guests are near ready to head home.

String some fairy lights on trees, branches and around the frames of your marquee – maybe check with the venue to make sure that’s all above board – and dot tea lights around the place: on tables, on your cake table and on all available flat spaces! Then you can task your bridesmaids and groomsmen with doing the honours once the lights go down – guests who are just adjusting to the dark will be dazzled by these twinkling lights.

* Okay, so we lied – that Olympic cover of Call Me Maybe is still awesome. On repeat.
