Real Wedding - Milena and Mark in Dublin Ireland

We loved this Irish and Bulgarian fusion wedding from the moment we saw it, so we had to include it in our real weddings!

Milena, the bride, is originally from Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia, while the groom, Mark is from Ireland’s capital city, Dublin. The couple first met through their maid of honor who was having a birthday party. They now have a five-year-old son, Mattie, who was a big part of their wedding day.

But it was at the beautiful Torc Waterfall in Ireland’s world famous Ring Of Kerry that Mark popped the question. “Milena was in a really bad mood that evening,” Mark says, “because our son refused to go to sleep. While she was settling him down I was outside asking Milena’s mother for her daughters hand in marriage. I don’t speak Bulgarian and she doesn’t speak English so I had asked one of Milena’s friends to prepare something for me that was really beautiful. When Milena arrived downstairs I suggested a drive up to the waterfall, which is where I proposed. I was very nervous so it took a while to gather the courage, but thankfully she said yes!”

The wedding took place in Dublin and combined both cultures in the day as Mark explained, “Milena’s bridesmaid welcomed our Bulgarian guests to the church at the beginning of the service which was great as it set the tone for the service and put everyone at ease. During the service we had two special Bulgarian traditions - one where we kicked a small tin filled with water and some flowers for good luck and children. The second was the breaking of the bread where we held a loaf over our heads with our backs to one another. Whoever breaks off the larger chunk is said to be the ‘boss’ in the marriage. Needless to say I let Milena take the larger half!”

It was at the charming setting of the Village of Lyons where the couple decided to have their reception and celebrate becoming husband and wife with family from all over the world, and of course Mattie!
