Real Wedding - Rachel and Gary in Cancun, Mexico

We dream of spending our days under a warm sun beside a clear blue sea, so when we saw this real wedding we felt like we had instantly been transported to a tropical paradise!

Gary and Rachel were a couple for nine years before they got engaged, and five years of those was a long distance relationship when Gary played professional hockey. “We got engaged August 24," Rachel says, “and it was the most exciting moment of my life.  I knew it had to be happening soon because, let’s face it, it had been almost nine years!”

Rachel’s parents invited the couple to their home for a BBQ and Gary accepted the invitation, “I tried to decline for fear of ruining what I thought could be ‘The night’ but we went anyway. We were getting ready to go and I checked his pockets, but there was no box! I started to get mad inside, I was thinking this was never going to happen!”

“I let it go by the time we got to my parents and we were enjoying a glass of wine while supper was cooking. Gary took my hand, In front of my family in their kitchen, he got down on one knee and proposed. I was blown away! This moment was made equally special because he chose to let my family in on my big surprise."

The couple knew that if they waited, Rachel’s dad would not be able to walk her down the aisle, "My dad has been battling advanced prostate cancer for the past five years and his condition was beginning to progress quickly.”

So the couple decided to have a March wedding and the perfect solution was a destination wedding. “Gary and I decided on the Barcelo Tucancun Beach Resort in Cancun, Mexico, and it was fabulous,” Rachel says. “The beach stretched for miles, the sun was gorgeous. The wedding day was magical and everything went so smoothly. I’ll never forget dancing for hours outside under the beautiful lighting and hearing the waves of the ocean.”

45 of the couple’s closest family and friends were there to spend a week with them in Cancun, and they got to be a part of their special day. “I loved waking up each morning and seeing family and friends at breakfast, at the beach or around the pool deck. We spent time with family who flew in from across Canada and had a nice time reconnecting. This was my most memorable vacation with my family.”
