Survivor Story: Breast Cancer Awareness Shoot
Vonetta Coates was doing her routine breast examination when she noticed something out of the ordinary. “I felt a lump in my right breast during a self-examination,” she says, “but I didn't feel a lump in my left breast. The next couple of days I continued to check and the lump was still there. Then I went to the doctor. Two of my doctor's thought my lump was non-cancerous, but they said ‘Let's do a biopsy to rule it out!’”
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2013, five days after my 37th birthday. It was more of a shock for my friends and family than me. When I was told, I said ‘OK, now what do we do?’"
Vonetta immediately began treatment, and undertook grueling chemotherapy to fight the cancer. “I had six cycles of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. My last treatment was in October. Since then I've had two mammograms and a MRI and all is well. I feel great, so great now.”
Photographer Kishana Highgate was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and decided to organize a shoot to inspire young brides, and to let them know that the wedding of their dreams can still come true even if they are diagnosed with cancer. “I don't know anyone who hasn't been touched by breast cancer in some form or another,” Kishana says. “ I encourage all young brides to fight!
What would Vonetta’s advice be to other women? Self -examine regularly! If it feels different, get it checked out!”
